Maracaibo in located in Northwestern Venezuela, capital of Zulia State, the chief seaport and
industrial center for the petroleum-rich Maracaibo Basin. The city is located on the western shore of a channel linking Lake
Maracaibo and the Gulf of Venezuela (an arm of the Caribbean Sea). The University of Zulia (1891), Rafael Urdaneta University
(1973), and a museum of military history are here. The city was founded as Nueva Zamora by Spain in 1571 and retains a large
quarter dating from the Spanish colonial period. The city prospered in the 17th century, when it was attacked several times
by pirates, and then declined until petroleum was discovered nearby in 1917. Population (1991) 1,207,513. The city seems
to revolve around the beauty of the women. The women are a mix of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Arab, German, African,
and indigenous people. This mix has resulting in the best looking women in Latin America. Don't take our
word for it, go to Maracaibo and see for yourself.

Interesting tours can be arranged around Lake Maracaibo. Both the
Ciénagas del Catatumbo National Park and Ciénaga De Los Olivitos Nature Reserve, are home to a wide variety of wildlife. Los
Olivitos was established in 1986, and rare species of manatees, coastal alligators, and sea turtles live within its 52,000h
acre habitats. The reserve is also an important stop for migratory birds, most notably flamingoes. Ciénagas del Catatumbo
National Park is situated on the southwestern shore of the lake, between the rivers of Catatumbo and Santa Ana. It was granted
national park status in 1991 to protect its swamp and wetland areas. The park has a large population of both resident and
migratory birds, including many species of heron, egrets, and storks. Among the many mammals represented here are the capybara,
and the freshwater dolphin. This area is also subject to frequent thunderstorms.

Zulia's people, or Zulianos, are known
for their sense of humor and their folkloric music. The Gaita, Maracaibo's signature music style, consists of improvised rhyming
vocals over four-string guitars, drums, and maracas. The Gaita is featured in festivals throughout the year, and predominates
during Christmas all around the country. In the northwestern part of the state live the Guajiro Indians, the largest indigenous
group in Venezuela. They are often seen in Maracaibo wearing their traditional dress: women in long, brightly colored dresses
and men in loincloths. Many of these are artisans that weave tapestries, blankets and hammocks to sell in the Guajira markets
and craft shops.
